What is the LDC online mentoring scheme?

Four one-hour mentoring sessions with a notable professional in the field of comics and graphic novels. The sessions will take place over zoom, skype or equivalent at agreed intervals. We will put you in touch with your selected mentor for you both to make mutually convenient arrangements and to decide on a timeline for your sessions. We'd suggest you have one session every month or every five or six weeks.

Bookings close on 31st December 2020.

WALLIS EATES

WALLIS EATES was shortlisted for the Myriad Editions First Graphic Novel award in 2014 for her graphic memoir, ‘Mumoirs’. Since then she has worked with brain injury survivors, prisoners, amateur boxers and adults with dementia to collaborate on stories through graphic narrative format. 'Wings' is a collaboration with Dr. Victoria Anderson and the men of HMP Wandsworth which was funded after a successful Kickstarter campaign and is due out this year, while she continues to work on ‘Like an Orange’ which is crowdfunding through publishers Unbound Books - a graphic narrative inspired by her residency with the charity Headway who help to rehabilitate brain injury survivors. Anthology contributions include 'Drawing Power' edited by Diane Noomin, and did a recent strip for Extinction Rebellion's paper, 'The Hourglass', She is currently providing Monday Memoir strips in Write On! Extra online magazine for Pen 2 Print. Wallis regularly teaches long and short term comic/zine courses and workshops and has a back ground in Education working for the children's charity, Into Film. She is also a London coordinator for Laydeez Do Comics.

Wallis would be happy to mentor on all related comics, specifically ideas development, self-publishing, zines, autobiography, collaboration, networking.

RACHAEL BALL

Rachael Ball's first book, ‘The Inflatable Woman’ (Bloomsbury), was one of the Guardian’s Best graphic novels 2015. Her second graphic novel, ‘Wolf’ (Selfmadehero 2018), was funded by Arts Council England and was described by the Times Literary Supplement as ‘wildly inventive, poignant and elegiac’ and by Pipedream Comics as ‘a ‘timeless classic.’ She taught art in secondary schools for 16 years and now teaches regular graphic novel masterclasses at the House of Illustration, a children’s book course at The Art Academy and more recently taught children's book illustration at the Anglia Ruskin University for the Pathways Children’s Illustration course. She has discussed her work on Radio 4’s Women’s Hour), and at The Edinburgh Book Festival in 2019.

She is a co-ordinator of the London branch of LDComics and is currently working on her 3rd graphic novel, ‘The Patsy Papers.’

DR. NICOLA STREETEN

Dr Nicola Streeten is a speaker, writer, drawer, teacher of comics and organiser of comics events. Her graphic memoir Billy, Me & You (2011, Myriad Editions) is about her process of bereavement following the death of her child. Her AHRC funded doctoral research informed her co-editing of The Inking Woman (2018, Myriad Editions) an illustrated history of women’s cartooning in Britain, complemented by UK Feminist Cartoons and Comics: A Critical Survey (2020 Palgrave Macmillan). With over twenty years’ experience as a freelance illustrator, since 2009 she has been working specifically with the comics form. Nicola has extensive experience of delivering comics workshops, both nationally and internationally in a variety of contexts to people of all levels. Since 2014 she has taught on Art and Design undergraduate courses at London College of Communication (UAL), Kingston University and Brighton University and on courses at The Creative Writing Programme, Brighton. Her work mentoring artists individually has been a central element of her role in developing and delivering outcomes for the British Council “Creating Heroines” project since 2018. She has sat as judge on the Myriad First Graphic Novel competition and for the Laydeez Awards prize.

LUCY SULLIVAN:

Animator, Artist & creator of BARKING, the graphic novel published by Unbound. Alongside her work in creating sequential narratives Lucy has significant experience with crowdfunding, social media and promotion. She is the recipient of an Arts Council England/ National Lottery Grant and co-commissioned by the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. Lucy can advise on creating small to large scales works from early stages and help you go from idea to print stage either by small press or traditional routes to publishing.

KARRIE FRANSMAN

Karrie Fransman is a comic creator. Her comics have been published in The Guardian, The Times, Time Out, The Telegraph, the BBC, The New Statesman and by The Arts Council. She published two graphic novels with Penguin Random House; ‘The House That Groaned’, and the award winning ‘Death of the Artist’. She developed an award winning comic, ‘Over, Under, Sideways, Down’ about an Iranian teenage refugee, for The British Red Cross, created an installation for the British Council and Southbank Centre and was commissioned to make a ‘Selves Portrait’ for an exhibition with Manchester Art Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. She has spoken and run workshops worldwide for organisations including The Guardian Masterclasses, TEDx, Central Saint Martins, Oxford University, The Hay Festival, The Big Draw, House of Illustration and The British Library, and presented her work worldwide from Russia to Bangladesh, Lebanon and Mexico. KRIPA JOSHI

Kripa Joshi is the creator of Miss Moti, a plump brown character who blurs the line between fantasy and reality. Originally from Nepal, she studied Illustration at the School of Visual Arts, New York, with a Fulbright scholarship. In 2016 she started the Miss Moti-vation series, a weekly illustration of Miss Moti with a motivational quotes. Currently the doing an EcoLogic with Miss Moti series which focuses on weekly green living ideas. Miss Moti has been featured in BBC Women’s Hour, BBC Asian Network, the Guardian and other international publications. Her work has also been exhibited at the Lightbox, Transport Museum and at the House of Illustration as part of the Comics Creatrix exhibition. Kripa has co-edited the Strumpet, a transatlantic women’s comic anthology, and also conducted art and comic workshops for children.

JANETTE PARRIS

JANETTE PARRIS is an award winning multidisciplinary visual artist who investigates the contemporary urban experience, using narrative, humour and popular formats, including soap opera, stand-up comedy, musical theatre, cartoons, comics and animation. Parris has exhibited widely nationally and internationally for 25years including TATE, The Royal Academy, The New Art Gallery Walsall, ICA, Kunsthaus Zürich, Hayward Gallery Touring, Art on the Underground, and was one of six lead contemporary artists selected for Museums at Night 2014. Parris is the founder of ‘Arch’ an established comic which was included in the British Library exhibition “Comics Unmasked” and can be heard being interviewed by artist Bob & Roberta Smith in Joy of Text, a recent BBC Radio 4 documentary series The Art of Now.

Simone Lia is an award winning comic artist/illustrator/writer. She has written and illustrated several children’s books and graphic novels, including Fluffy (Jonathan Cape) and They Didn’t Teach THIS at Worm School (Walker Books). She’s written comic strips for adults and children for numerous publications including The Independent on Sunday, The DFC, The Phoenix and she has a weekly strip The Simone Lia Cartoon in The Observer. Her comic paintings and drawings have been exhibited across Europe and galleries include The Tate Britain.

EMILY HAWORTH-BOOTH

EMILY HAWORTH-BOOTH is an author and illustrator whose 2018 debut picture book ‘The King Who Banned the Dark’ was shortlisted for nine awards including the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, Little Rebels Award and Independent Bookshop Week Award and longlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration. Her most recent picture book, ‘The Last Tree’, was described by The Bookseller as 'a thought-provoking ecological fable’, chosen by The Sunday Times as ‘One to Watch Out For’ and by both the Guardian and Observer as a children’s book of the month. Emily is currently working on an illustrated non-fiction children’s book as well as on her long-form graphic memoir which was shortlisted for the LDC Prize in 2017. Emily won the Observer/Cape/Comica Graphic Short Story Prize in 2013 for her story ‘Colonic’, and has taught the graphic novel courses at the Royal Drawing School for ten years. She loves delving into narrative structure and was recently described by a student as ‘the story osteopath’. Her favourite things about teaching and mentoring are seeing a student’s creative confidence grow as they find their voice, and the collaborative joy of working out story problems together. She is interested in how one person’s creativity can find its expression across many different forms, and as well as graphic novels and picture books enjoys experimenting with poetry, songwriting and creative activism. As an LDC mentor Emily can work with you on graphic novels/memoirs, picture books, or any other sequential project that combines word and image (or even silent wordless sequences!)

EMMA BURLEIGH

EMMA BURLEIGH won the 2018 Laydeez do Comics Prize for her graphic novel-in-progress, a watercolour memoir about her relationship with her birth mother who relinquished her for adoption. She's passionate about the vibrant and mercurial qualities of watercolour, and she will offer watercolour support, demos, and troubleshooting during your session if you’d like. She’s interested in giving visual form to non-verbal, emotional and psychological states, and helping you to find the narrative threads from which you can weave a story. She's also happy to help with structuring your work into a coherent form, and she can share tips on self publishing, finding a publisher, zine- making, public engagement, working in partnerships and surviving as an artist-teacher! She self-publishes Zines, teaches Comics, and runs Mindful Art Journaling courses. Right now she's creating a book called "Soul Colour" which is an illustration/painting course for mindfulness and creativity. It will be published by Liminal 11 early in 2021. Emma co-ordinates the Bristol branch of LDComics.
