APABA South Florida CLE of A LONG MARCH August 8, 2023, 12:00 PM

THE LEGAL LIMBO OF FILIPINOS WHO SERVED IN WWII

Over 1.2 million people claim they served.

Less than 20% were added to the official roster.

Women were explicitly excluded.

“The root of this whole issue is systemic racism against Filipinos: their cases have been treated differently.”

-Judy Donegan Esq., The Veterans Consortium

A LONG MARCH CLE presentations explore the U.S. legal treatment of Filipinos who served during WWII including:

•Inequities in the post-war guerrilla recognition program

•The decision that prevented Filipinos from gaining access to the U.S. Army Board for the Correction of Military Records and the treatment of Filipino service records since the war

•The benefit status of Filipino WWII veterans, including legal issues with the FVEC benefit’s denial rate of 56%

•Legal issues encountered during the pursuit of U.S. citizenship by Filipino veterans of WWII

PRACTICE POINTS

Practice points that will be discussed during this CLE will focus on…

∙ veterans’ law ∙ administrative law ∙ federal court jurisdiction

…vis-à-vis litigation and advocacy concerning veterans’ issues including the unique treatment of veterans’ matters, the potential for class action litigation, and the ongoing fight to repeal the Rescission Acts and challenge to U.S. Army policy and VA interpretation as unconstitutional.

SPECIAL INVITATION-ONLY SCREENING OF THE FULL DOCUMENTARY FILM

A LONG MARCH documentary is the revealing look at how the U.S. conscripted Filipino forces to defeat WWII Axis powers, then systematically denied these veterans the rights and benefits promised for honorable service. In addition to the free CLE presentation, we invite you to purchase a ticket and watch the full film on demand or leave a donation for our impact campaign to recognize all who served.
