Learn a skill at the Batsford Gallery this winter!
Established in 1843, Batsford is an award-winning independent publisher of illustrated books on design, art, crafts and textiles. It recently opened B.T. Batsford, a gallery and bookshop on Hackney Road in London where it hosts an exciting programme of exhibitions and events. For its first series of workshops, it has brought together ten outstanding artists who will each teach a one day class next January. Each course comes with a beautiful gift box containing the material you will need for the class, a notebook published by Batsford and a few surprises. The boxes will be available towards the end of November, well in time to be gifted at Christmas. Lunch, hot drinks and biscuits are included on the day.
About this workshop: Working with a variety of repurposed materials, including paper, cloth and plastics, this workshop introduces cordage (string) making, followed by looping with the cordage to make small vessel forms. Combining basic techniques with an experimental approach to materials, this workshop has an emphasis on process and will provide you with the skills to experiment further with a range of materials.
About the teacher: Alice Fox studied Contemporary Surface Design & Textiles at Bradford School of Arts & Media and completed an MA in Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University. Her practice based on personal engagement with landscape and has sustainability at its heart. She works with natural fibres and gathered materials, employing natural dyes, stitch, weave and soft basketry techniques. These elements come together in different combinations to create grouped surfaces and structures.
Alice’s books – “Natural Processes in Textile Art” and “Wild Textiles” – are published with Batsford.
Materials supplied: Small Japanese scissors, handmade wooden needle, small spray bottle, wooden egg former, a range of cloth, paper & plastics (mostly re-purposed). If you choose to pick up from the gallery, you will be offered 10% off the price of books on your visit.
