A quick chat with the president of Denmark’s biggest fencing club

Denmark’s biggest and most successful fencing club, you say?

Below, we have a quick chat with the president of Theis Andersen Samsig, President of Fægteklubben (Fencing Club) Trekanten. As the name suggests, Fencing Club Trekanten is a dedicated club for the sport of fencing, which has members ranging from age four through to 86. Attendees of our camps can expect a comprehensive experience featuring high-quality fencing training with expert coaching on technique, tactics, and mental preparation. 

The camps offer a friendly and competitive environment with group sessions and internal matches, complemented by physical and mental conditioning through fitness training. Beyond fencing, the camps emphasise social activities and networking, with team-building exercises and the chance to connect with fellow fencers. 

Cultural experiences may be included, especially in summer, along with comfortable accommodations and meals. The camps prioritize injury prevention and recovery, ensuring health and safety, while also providing fun and memorable experiences through recreational activities and special events, such as guest speakers or award ceremonies.

Fencing Club Trekanten is almost 100 years old! Impressive. What have been some of the club’s biggest challenges and successes?

In my lifetime, the biggest challenge must have been the time where our facilities burned down. We had to relocate to a commercial lease that was not built for the sport and also was very expensive. After some years we had to relocate again due to our financial situation and we had to move around between various smaller facilities, including the basement of a public indoor swimming pool. Eventually, in cooperation with the Municipality, we were able to build our own facilities, which is where we are located today. 

Today, our biggest success is that we have thrived and grown since those challenges, making a positive impact on our community and a difference for our members. We are 300 members strong, from age 4 to age 86, from beginner to elite, and on all three disciplines of modern sports fencing.

What marketing do you do for your club and events? 

We usually see an uptake in interest in the sport following media coverage. But as a niche sport, we do need to advertise actively through social media and ads to reach our target audience.

Finally, what does the future hold for Fencing Club Trekanten?

We’re working actively to grow our member base and to expand our range of services and offers while still maintaining quality in everything we do. As an organisation with focus on building elite fencers, we continue to work on qualifying athletes to the European and World Championships as well as working towards the LA28 Olympics.
