The Brisbane Symphony Orchestra is excited to bring to you the first concert of our 2022 Season “Heart Songs”. Entitled “From the Heart” the works in this concert explores our depth of feeling for places dear to our heart.

Rituals of the Heartland” by local composer, Catherine Likhuta, who was born and raised in the Ukraine, is inspired by the folklore of her homeland. She writes, “I have wonderful childhood memories of snowy winters and rich culture and folklore, with many legends and traditions dating back centuries.” This contemporary take on a symphonic poem was the result of a collaboration with her four year old daughter, as together they wrote a fairy-tale which was the source of inspiration for the work. As a special treat, the composer will be joining us to play the piano part in her own work.

Block’s Schelomo, by contrast, is the final work in his “Jewish Cycle” in which he was attempting to discover his musical identity. It was his way of expressing his personal conception and interpretation of what he though Jewish music should be, since the Jewish national state was yet to be formed. “Schelomo” was just one of the biblically inspired works that made up the cycle. Originally conceived as a work for voice and orchestra, a serendipitous meeting between cellist Alexandre Barjansky and the composer led him to use the cello as the solo instrument representing the voice of King Solomon from the text of the Book of Ecclesiastes. The cello soloist for our performance will be Trish Dean, a recipient of numerous awards, concerto soloist at international and national festivals and current Guest Principal of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

The concert concludes with Mendelssohn’s Symphony no.3, the “Scottish”, which was inspired by a walking tour of Scotland with his friend, Karl Klingemann. Mendelssohn struggled with the completion of the work which he started in 1829 and did not finish until 1842. While it is debatable whether he intended the finished work to be considered “Scottish”, it’s original provenance is hard to dismiss, as the piece evokes the wild Romantic landscapes of the north.

The concert will be conducted by the orchestra’s Chief Conductor, Paul Dean.
