Please join the Wadham College and wider Oxford community for a one-of-a-kind audio-visual performance by Dvi Doli (Дві Долі), a Ukrainian duo whose repertoire includes classical Ukrainian folk songs and jazz accompanied by the bandura and voice. The bandura is Ukraine's unique national folk instrument with 65 strings which combines elements of the zither and lute, and has 17 more strings than the classical harp. Banduras were first chronicled in the mid-1400s, while stringed instruments have been played in the regions that now form Ukraine since 591.
Julia Kogut-Kalynyuk and Kateryna Trachuk are classically trained professional musicians from Lviv, Ukraine who form the duo Dvi Doli. They arrived in Oxford in May 2022, fleeing Russia’s war in Ukraine. They both have been playing the bandura since they were 5 and 9 years old. They obtained Master’s degrees in bandura and voice from the Mykola Lysenko Lviv National Music Academy, Ukraine’s leading musical conservatory. They have toured in Poland, the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, and Spain, and look forward to sharing their love for Ukrainian traditional folk music with the UK. They will donate 50% of ticket sales towards charities that provide humanitarian support to refugees in Ukraine, alongside all supplementary donations.
The Holywell Music Room is one of the earliest purpose built concert venues in the world and the first in Europe. The venue is known for its exceptional acoustics alongside visual projections. This will be a night to remember!
