ABOUT SABLE ISLAND
A 30-YEAR JOURNEY TO CAPTURE THE UNIQUE BEAUTY OF THE WILD HORSES OF SABLE ISLAND.
Two hundred miles off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, there is a mystical island. It is known as “the Graveyard of the Atlantic,” in recognition of the hundreds of shipwrecks that have happened there over time as a result of the fierce seas, unruly fog and the island’s nearly invisible, long and low form.
Through the incredible photo works of the globally renowned photographer, Roberto Dutesco, one of the few people to visit the island and document its magic, Sable Island has become known for something else. Something equally powerful and truly beautiful. The Wild Horses of Sable Island.
Abandoned there by sailors long ago or cast ashore from wrecks on the many sandbars that surround the island, this feral herd of some 500 wild horses, untouched by humans, has managed to thrive in an austere, unforgiving environment that offers not a single sheltering tree and just grass and rainwater ponds for sustenance. The multi-sensory Wild Horses of Sable Island exhibit will introduce you to the surroundings and experience of these exquisite creatures.

Driven by the belief that art and beauty transforms how people think about conservation, Roberto's efforts, his work, talks and charitable activities along with the Chasing Wild Horses documentary were instrumental in driving international awareness of Sable Island and securing official protection for its wild horses.
"I wish to bring my experience among the wild horses of Sable Island to people around the world, to show them true wilderness in its primal state, unaware and afraid of humans. I wish to recreate for others my extraordinary experience."
