🎶 January Headliner: Dom Pipkin – London Piano, New Orleans Soul
Renowned pianist and songwriter Dom Pipkin blends the rich traditions of New Orleans piano with a deep passion for blues and soul. Described by Blues in Britain as “one of the world’s greatest exponents of New Orleans piano,” Pipkin has built a career spanning nearly three decades, performing across the globe alongside music legends.
A sought-after session musician, Pipkin has worked with David Byrne, Ray Davies, and Morcheeba, among others. His love for the New Orleans sound began in the early ’90s, leading to regular performances in the city, including at the celebrated Piano Night and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. He’s a staple on the European blues and boogie-woogie circuit, gracing countless clubs, theaters, and festivals.
Jazz icon Jamie Cullum says, “I can’t hold a candle to this guy.”
Pipkin has a deep affinity for the music of James Booker (1939–1983), capturing his signature mix of blues, classical, and soul. This led to an invitation to perform at the world premiere of Bayou Maharajah at SXSW in 2014 and numerous subsequent screenings.
He has shared the stage with Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, with Grammy-winner Jon Clearyfrequently inviting him to jam in New Orleans. His live shows combine original compositions with Big Easy classics, delivering a high-energy, immersive experience. Classic Rock Blues Magazine praises him for cooking up “a steaming musical stew that has the crowd dancing and clapping for more.”
During the COVID lockdown, Pipkin performed over 120 livestreams and completed his solo album “C’mon Sunshine”, a collection of original songs infused with New Orleans and blues piano styles. His 2023 live album, “Live at The Temple,”captures the raw energy of two sets recorded at London’s Temple of Art and Music.
Beyond music, Pipkin makes his on-screen debut in Netflix’s upcoming thriller Black Doves (Dec 5, 2024) and A Thousand Blows (Feb 21, 2025), from the creators of Peaky Blinders. He also appears alongside K-pop superstar Jay Chou in the latest Rimowa commercial.
Alongside his solo career, Pipkin has toured the world with Morcheeba since the band’s inception in 1996. He is also an educator, hosting a popular New Orleans jam session in London and contributing keyboard-focused articles to Blues Matters magazine.
